The novel follows the story of an unnamed heroine who arrives in a remote rural town at the invitation of her older brother, recently separated from his wife. She is meant to care for him and help maintain his home. Yet, from the moment she arrives, strange and unsettling events begin to unfold birds falling ill, animals dying without cause drawing the suspicion of the local townspeople. They begin to associate these ominous signs with the newcomer, especially as her ancestry traces back to a Jewish family that was once persecuted, expelled, and burned in the very same town during a wave of antisemitic hatred.
